Fall Foliage Road Trip 2025

The fall foliage forecast declared that most locations in the state would be past peak by the time my Fall Break and accompanying road trip with Danelle rolled around.  Forecasts such as this are further evidence that human beings are absolute hot garbage at predicting the future.

Wolf Creek Pass
Pagosa Springs was our first destination, which meant a stop at Wolf Creek Pass.

Wolf Creek Pass
This was my third time stopping at Wolf Creek Pass for photos.  And the third time the views were stunning.

Treasure Falls
Treasure Falls was next up.  It, too, never disappoints.  Late afternoon light certainly doesn't hurt.

Wolf Creek Pass
Rain came in overnight, so my plans to shoot sunrise didn't materialize.  But Wolf Creek Pass was still worth another visit to capture its moodier side.

Wolf Creek
The view of Wolf Creek itself from just across the highway was also beautiful.

Wolf Creek
Overcast conditions often result in boring landscape shots.  Low clouds, however, can be really cool.

Colorado Highway 550
You know what else are cool?  Cows?  And this little herd found me fascinating.

Colorado Highway 550
I find the stretch of highway from Durango to Silverton in many ways more spectacular than the Million Dollar Highway from Silverton to Ouray.  Consider this photo Exhibit A.

Colorado Highway 550
And here I present Exhibit B.

Crystal Lake, Million Dollar Highway
Not that the Million Dollar Highway is hideous.  Crystal Lake may not have been especially crystal on this gloomy day, but water in a scene is nearly always a good thing.

Uncompahgre River, Million Dollar Highway
Even better than still water is running water, and the day's rains had this cascade along the Uncompahgre River flowing briskly.

Uncompahgre River, Million Dollar Highway
And with the recently fallen (and therefore still vibrant) leaves strewn along the bank?  This is quintessential autumn in Colorado to me.

Colorado Highway 135
We made one last stop outside Crested Butte to pick up some log furniture, where this unique piece of roadside art provided the perfect foreground element for the golden aspens and grumpy skies.

Past peak?  Not from what I could see!

Crested Butte: Christmas 2025

Our family spent Christmas together in Crested Butte.  A dusting of fresh snow fell on Christmas morning, so that afternoon saw me out with my camera.

Mt. Crested Butte from Kebler Pass
I headed up towards Kebler Pass first, knowing the pass was closed but believing there would be a good view somewhere along the short stretch of road that is open.  Not surprisingly, there is!

Mt. Crested Butte
I got some great shots along the Woods Walk this past summer, so I thought I'd check it out again.  Right above the parking area seemed like a good place to start.

Mt. Crested Butte
Again ,not surprisingly, there is a beautiful view to be had there.

Woods Walk, Crested Butte
I didn't go too far along the trail, even though it was nicely tramped down without being icy.  As over the summer, I like the framing at the end of the aspen grove.

Woods Walk, Crested Butte
Unlike over the summer, I had low western sun to work with which looked wonderful through the dormant trees.

A short expedition, but a rewarding one!

Crested Butte Wildflowers 2024

Wildflower season in Crested Butte is always amazing.  This year I made reservations to camp near Gunnison for a couple of nights and capture what I could.

Mount Crested Butte
The great views started on my drive into town, with a variety of wildflowers blooming in the foreground and Mount Crested Butte looking fine in the background.

Snodgrass Mountain Sunset
After dinner in town I headed toward Snodgrass Mountain hoping for a nice sunset shot.  I found what I was looking for.

Mount Crested Butte Sunset
Then I had nice warm light on Mount Crested Butte as I was heading out, so why not?

Mount Crested Butte Sunset
I hoped for some color in the clouds that never materialized.  Not that the view was bad.

Woods Walk, Crested Butte
The next morning it was up before sunrise to hike the Woods Walk.  I loved the fog in the valley.

Woods Walk, Crested Butte
Speaking of fog.  I like the aspens flanking the trail here, too.

Owlsclaws, Woods Walk, Crested Butte
Once the sun was up I had great light on wildflowers like these Owlsclaws...

Silvery Lupine, Woods Walk, Crested Butte
... this Silvery Lupine...

Fireweed, Woods Walk, Crested Butte
... and this Fireweed.

American Robin, Woods Walk, Crested Butte
This American Robin was EXTREMELY proud of whatever he had in his beak.  I thought it was a worm, but looking at the image it seems more like nest material.

American Crow, Woods Walk, Crested Butte
I took this shot almost entirely so I could caption it "Attempted Murder."  Thank you very much. :)

Owlsclaws, Woods Walk, Crested Butte
More Owlsclaws, this time spotlighted nicely.

Woods Walk, Crested Butte
I turned around here and headed back, feeling like I'd seen most everything I needed to see.

Peanut Lake and Gothic Mountain, Crested Butte
Gothic Mountain was reflecting nicely in Peanut Lake, and I thought this setting would be a good place to return to for sunset.  So I went into town and bummed around for about 10 hours, enjoying a very lazy summer day.

Peanut Lake and Mount Crested Butte
Again, I didn't get the color I was hoping for at sunset.  But Mount Crested Butte still looked pretty.

Peanut Lake and Mount Crested Butte
One final shot, then into town for some ice cream before driving back to my campsite.  This was my last photo outing for the summer, and a great way to end the season!

Gunnison County Fall Foliage 2023

Danelle and I took a little fall foliage camping trip out in the western part of the state last weekend.  Ginny even got to make the trip with us!  We couldn't leave until after I finished school Friday afternoon, so most of our drive that day to our Hipcamp spot just west of Crawford Reservoir was after dark.

Sunrise near Crawford, CO
We got our first look at our surroundings the next morning, with a beautiful sunrise over Mendicant Ridge.

Backlit Gambel Oak Leaf, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
We headed first to the north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, where the Gambel Oaks were in fine color.

Kneeling Camel View, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
This was my third trip to Black Canyon, and second with a family member having visited with Zak back in 2015.  I just need to bring Taryn someday!

Anthracite Creek
From Black Canyon we headed to Kebler Pass, which I'd also shot back in 2014.  Then I'd seemingly arrived just before peak foliage.  This time, we seemed to time it perfectly.

Kebler Pass
If I had to quibble about anything -- and nature photographers always do -- a little more snow on the peaks and a few clouds to add texture to the sky would have been nice.  Never satisfied, right?

Marcellina Mountain, Kebler Pass
I had vague memories of stopping and shooting in similar places nine years earlier.  Great composition is still great composition.

Marcellina Mountain, Kebler Pass
Marcellina Mountain trying to hide behind a small grove of aspens.

West Beckwith Peak, Kebler Pass
The views toward West Beckwith Peak were truly jaw-dropping.  Just a huge sea of gold.

West Beckwith Peak, Kebler Pass
I eventually had to agree to quit stopping at every viewpoint, or we might have never actually made it over the pass.

Kebler Pass
Looking over the aspens eventually turned into driving right through them, which was also breathtaking.

East Beckwith Mountain, Kebler Pass
Our final stop was near Horse Ranch Park for a look at East Beckwith Mountain, which was also ringed in blazing yellow trees.

East Beckwith Mountain, Kebler Pass
I desperately wanted to get a nice reflection in this small pond, but couldn't decide what to do about the dead tree going right in the middle of it.  Danelle thought it added something to the scene.  I'm not so sure.

What else can I say other than that it was a truly spectacular day?

Trail 403

I wanted to catch some of the wildflowers around Crested Butte, but I didn't want to deal with crowds during the Wildflower Festival.  I figured heading up a day before the festival started would result in fewer people and, thus, a better shot at a parking spot for Ludwig.  So on the morning of July 6, I made the four-hour drive to Gunnison County.

Trail 403, Gunnison County
After lunch in town at one of my favorite spots, I decided to try Trail 403.  I'd never hiked it before, and recent reports mentioned lots of beautiful wildflowers.

Ballhead Waterleaf, Trail 403
I started seeing wildflowers like this Ballhead Waterleaf at fairly low elevations.  But a lot of what I saw wasn't blooming yet.  Late snows may have delayed the growing season.

Trail 403, Gunnison County
No matter.  Views like this were just fine without fields of blooming wildflowers.

Gothic Mountain, Trail 403
Gothic Mountain beckoned, and I considered pushing for the summit.

Trail 403, Gunnison County
Then I saw the trail make a HUGE drop before ascending again.  I was uninterested in essentially double the elevation gain, so I turned around and headed back a little under two miles in.

Trail 403, Gunnison County
I stopped for a very nice panoramic looking north-northeast.

Trail 403, Gunnison County
The view included Maroon Bells, which were nice to see from a different angle.

Trail 403, Gunnison County
The trail splits at one point, with the lower portion leading to...

Trail 403, Gunnison County
...a couple of sweet chairs.  I've seen lots of simple benches on trails, but never seating quite this posh.

Glacier Lily and Swallowtail, Trail 403
I had come for wildflowers, and even though I wasn't seeing the bonanza I hoped for it made no sense to capture what was in bloom, like Glacier Lily nourishing a Swallowtail...

Prairie Bluebells, Trail 403
...Bluebells, most likely Prairie...

Glacier Lily, Trail 403
...another Glacier Lily nicely lit against a dark background...

Fitweed, Trail 403
...Fitweed...

Blue Columbine, Trail 403
...and some good old Blue Columbine.

One of the great things about Colorado is that "now what you'd hoped for" is often still pretty great, and that was the case this day.  A solid 3.72-mile hike with a very modest 685 feet of elevation gain, it still took me 2:23:57 with all my photo stops.  And OK, maybe the altitude was a small factor!
