Iceland 2024: Skógafoss

A good night's rest in a bubble hotel (beautiful clear night skies, but sadly no aurora), and we were headed east to Vík.  The route along the southern coast took us right by another of Iceland's most famous waterfalls -- Skógafoss.

Skógafoss
A line of tripod-wielding photographers (so you know they're serious) were standing in the shallow outflow, and I was happy to join them.  It was amazing to be able to stand to close.  I had the sense that in the U.S., there would be all kinds of fencing and warning signs discouraging it.

I had similar issues with spray being this close, and I again didn't do a good job keeping my lens filter free of tiny droplets that ended up appearing in my images.  A shame, given how stunning the scene is.

Skógafoss
The weather forecast had called for overcast skies for our entire visit, so we were fortunate to have started the trip with so much sun.  And to fully capitalize on the unexpected light, we were gifted with a rainbow.

Skógafoss
A 200-foot climb up a 370-step metal staircase brings you to the top of the falls, and a view impressive in its own right.

Up here there is a safety railing, so Iceland's apparent embrace of Darwinism only goes so far.  But setting up the tripod just so almost makes it feel like a drone shot.  At least it feels that way to me, but having never actually used a drone I suppose I can't be certain.

Back down the steps, and we were back on the road to Vík.  So much more still to come!
