As much as I'd enjoyed reveling in the winter weather, in the few hours I'd been out I hadn't seen any wildlife. I figured birds would be looking for food and warmth, so I headed south a couple of miles to the Denver Audubon Nature Center.
I banked on the volunteers filling the feeders and the birds knowing it, and I was right on both counts. This Black-capped Chickadee was the first to greet me in a classic pose...... then he went into this sleek racing mode.
Spotted Towhee aren't a bird I often see in the clear, but I suppose even they have a hard time finding food in four inches of fresh snow and subzero temperatures. So there one was.
White-crowned Sparrows were the most abundant visitors, both feeding on the ground ...
... and fighting for space on the feeders.
The sole Downy Woodpecker who stopped by was a delightful little treat.
When the Woodhouse's Scrub-Jays landed on the feeders, they reminded me of Saint Bernards who think they're lapdogs.
I love this guy's curious look.
It surprised me that more birds weren't puffed up to fight the cold.
This Towhee picked pretty persistently through the snow to find a seed.
A Dark-eyed Junco gave me a hard time before finally emerging for a fairly clear shot.
My last shot was this White-breasted Nuthatch hopping on a tree trunk, then it was time to go. Seven species spotted in 40 minutes was a pretty terrific finish to this wonderful winter morning!
