Fort Hill Trail

Nauset Marsh Trail is a great hike, but it's short.  After I finished it the day was still young, the Salt Pond Visitor Center not yet open.  Fortunately I'd already scouted another opportunity in the area -- the Fort Hill Trail.

Song Sparrow, Fort Hill Trail
The trail is terrific, going through a red maple swamp and overlooking Nauset Marsh and Town Cove.  Along the way I came across a Song Sparrow singing joyfully, only to be supplanted by a rival.

Eastern Cottontail, Fort Hill Trail
Baby bunnies were everywhere, and teased me quite a bit.  They'd sit still along the trail until I got into position for a picture, then hop away.  This one thought it was safe in the underbrush, which it technically was.  All I wanted was a photo, which I got.

Common Eastern Bumble Bee and Beach Rose, Fort Hill Trail
Wildflowers were in bloom, bumblebees buzzing between them.  The whole vibe was like a Disney movie, without the dead parent.

The views ascending the final hill were tremendous.  Not the majestic vistas from the summit of a Colorado 14er.  Just immensely satisfying.

House Sparrow, Fort Hill Trail
I was back in our van and driving away when I saw this House Sparrow enjoying a meal on a fence.  I slowed down enough to get one shot before he decided there was too great a chance that I might steal its food and decided to hop off.   But sometimes, one shot is all you need. :)

A truly wonderful morning, with a sunrise viewing and two hikes all before 9 a.m.!
