Backyard Beauty, November 2024

We had a four-day snowstorm that saw me get outside to mainly do three things -- shovel, fill our bird feeders, and take pictures of our many feathered visitors.

Dark-eyed Juncos, American Tree Sparrow
A couple of Dark-eyed Juncos seem to be wondering why the American Tree Sparrow is flying away from the food.

House Finches
House Finches never seem to mind sharing the tube feeder.

House Finches
Nor do they mind sharing some branches to rest between feedings.

American Crow
American Crows haven't been frequent visitors to our backyard, and the ones who came this weekend seemed more inclined to watch than to eat.

Dark-eyed Junco
Another Junco enjoying some shelter from the storm.

House Finch
The sun eventually came out, and this finch was happy to soak up some rays.

Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay
The Woodhouse's Scrub-Jays preferred our neighbors' feeders (they had whole peanuts), but were willing to rest in our yard.

White-crowned Sparrow
I hadn't noticed White-crowned Sparrows on our feeders before this weekend, but I always enjoy seeing them.

House Finch
If the boy finches can enjoy some sun, so can the girls.

American Tree Sparrow
Speaking of sparrows, American Tree Sparrows were also newcomers.

Northern Flicker
We've been seeing Northern Flickers on our feeders for a few weeks, so it was no surprise that they came by frequently.

It was a lot of fun to not just see all our feeder activity, but to experiment with different times of day and locations to best capture it all.  Makes me (almost) look forward to the next blizzard!
