My brief visit to Grand Teton National Park was just an appetizer on my summer road trip. The main course was my first visit to Glacier National Park. I actually booked a camping spot for four nights to coincide with the visit of some close friends, and I'd never stayed in one spot in a park for that long. So I knew I had time to savor and explore.
I connected with my friends the very first day, who'd arranged for us to take a boat across Two Medicine Lake and do some hiking. On the drive we stopped at Running Eagle Falls, which is just a short walk from the parking lot.
Honestly, we were all stunned. Not only were the falls themselves gorgeous, but the whole setting was just picture perfect (pun intended).
We joked that the rest of the park was going to have a lot to live up to after this scene.
OK, we weren't really joking. This is seriously one of the most unique waterfalls I've ever seen. Most of the water from Two Medicine Creek first drops into a sinkhole before emerging. But when water levels are high, the overflow comes out above so the waterfall is actually falling on itself. So cool.
We did decide to continue and see what the rest of the park had to offer. The view from the east shore of Two Medicine Lake isn't too shabby.
After a relaxing two-mile boat ride to the west end of the lake, we did a short 1.1-mile hike to Twin Falls. And again, we were impressed!
The north falls ...
... and the south falls, which I liked a little better of the two. I guess they're different enough to technically be fraternal twins.
We sat at the falls for a while, ate, and walked back to the trailhead to wait for our boat to return. Flinsch Peak loomed to the north ...
Clouds we'd seen gathering to the west never turned into anything that would put a damper on our day. The Two Medicine area is apparently one of the less-visited parts of the park, but we found it to be wonderful!
