Headed back to Crested Butte for Memorial Day Weekend, and while we were blessed with clear weather for the drive there I can't say the same about the conditions during our stay. Cool, wet and overcast were the predominant conditions on Saturday and Sunday. But that certainly wasn't going to stop me from getting out and shooting.
I held out hope that a break in the clouds might reveal the sunrise to the east on Saturday morning. But it wasn't to be found at the end of Prospect Drive, where the aspens high on Mt. Crested Butte have yet to leaf out.
The low clouds limited visibility quite a bit, creating an eerie blank background to scenes that should have exposed sweeping mountain vistas.
Pale reflections of bare aspens on the slopes of Snodgrass Mountain.
An apparent road to nowhere.
I can't think of much better conditions to take pictures of a cemetery. Black and white seemed like an appropriate treatment to emphasize the somber setting.
This is the "mud season" in Crested Butte, which also means lots of standing water to create reflections in places where they're not normally found.
Peanut Lake is a place where reflections are perfectly normal, even in misty conditions.
No idea what this mysterious ruin on the shores of Peanut Lake is. A quick internet search came up empty.
In some spots, the lush green vegetation and abundant moisture was very reminiscent of some of the views on our trip to Alaska a couple of years ago.
Whatever the weather, the peace and joy I find being outside in an area as beautiful as this is unequaled. The mist obscuring some aspects of the scenery placed greater emphasis on others, presenting a unique opportunity to see the area differently.
More to come!
