From Silverton the Million Dollar Highway awaited to take me to Ouray, with two more waterfalls planned along the way.
The first was Bear Creek Falls, or so I thought. What I actually shot was Ralston Creek Falls, also visible from the lookout and directly across Uncompahgre Gorge from Bear Creek Falls. Bear Creek Falls apparently fall off from right under the highway, and I completely missed them!Next were Box Cañon Falls right in town. Located at the end of a slot canyon, they also proved difficult to shoot due to the narrow confines and absolute deluge of water pouring over them.
I headed into town for dinner, where my server informed me about Cascade Falls which were also right in town. There was just enough light left in the day for me to head there before going to my campground, and I was glad I did.
Thinking I'd had quite a full day, I was thrown one last pleasant surprise driving into my campground -- a trio of red fox kits playing on the side of the road! Fortunately, I had my trusty Nikon D750 with its telephoto lens ready to go on the passenger seat. I pulled off to the side, rolled down the window, cut the engine, and managed to capture one of the three...
...then one other before they disappeared into the brush. I waited a few more minutes, hoping for their return. But that fleeting glimpse was all I was to have. I was lucky to have been there at that exact moment, but having the foresight to have my camera ready and handy enabled me to get the shots. Only my third time seeing a fox in the wild, and the first time I'd managed to get good pictures. What a conclusion to a wonderful day!
